Not rocket science, but just as elusive?

I've been through a bunch - all, so far, less than ideal.
Common aliments:
whistle doesn't work when full
water boils out of the top
handle gets hot enough to burn your hand
heat discolors the pot
wife hates the shape - (doesn't go with her kitchen)
pot is useless after six months
etc.
etc.
Current pot is a LeCreuset and it is a big-bucks horror. If you're not there when it starts to boils, it floods the rangetop with boiling water from the lid.

What do you recommend for the complicated task of boiling water?

I'm not a coffee drinker, so a properly functioning tea pot is pretty high on my priority list.
