An incredible album that played to an incredible summer.
My summer of '67........
Graduated high school on June 15th so Sgt Pepper, just released, was being played continuously. The day before graduation everyone was in the auditorium for some sort of important information but I doubt anyone was paying attention. I felt a tap on my shoulder and it was the girl sitting directly behind me (just the cutest girl in school). She asked me if I was going to Monterey. Monterey? What's going on in Monterey? I didn't know anything was happening in Monterey. Just a big three day concert, and she was looking for a ride!
Of course I was going to Monterey!!!
I couldn't believe this was actually happening. We drove up the next morning in my new '67 Bug and I had no idea what I was going to experience in the next 72 hours. Needless to say I was blown away (more ways than one ;-)
Tickets were a whopping $3.50!
Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Burdon, Canned Heat, Janis Joplin,Country Joe and the Fish, Al Kooper, Butterfield Blues Band, Steve Miller, The Byrds, Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, The Who, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix.....
In between acts the were playing Sgt Pepper over the sound system.
We were sleeping in my car at night and got to know the couple sleeping in their car next to us. They invited us up to their place in San Francisco, Haight Ashbury to be exact after Monterey. We spent a week that I will never forget. Actually a Summer I will never forget.
I wonder if I would be the same person if all that had not happened those ten days that Summer of '67?
