There is no doubt that he was a few french fries short of a happy meal the day he climbed into his machine. The unfairness of the situation pushed him over from temperamental to outright "mad as hell and not going to take it any more".
It may have been that he made someone mad and they were putting the screws to him but remember that he didn't want to sell. He was being forced out by shady back room local politics. He probably had grandfathered environmental exemptions at his shop location that he lost when he was forced to sell/move. He had already lost income from blocked access to his business and spent a lot of time and money fighting the local govt. The cost to buy new property, move his equipment, and become EPA compliant would have been too high.
