(afaik)The OBD2 system will not pass smog in some states like Californai until all the drive cycles have been met.

Meaning with some vehicles it has to be driven 30mph for 5 minutes, then WOT on the freeway ramp, then 70mph for 15, then 5 mph for 25 minutes, with at least 80% load to test short/long fuel trim when EGR valve is opened then.....so...anyways you get the point.

The computer wants all possible real world driving being accomplished
But for the weekend-trips-to-the-store granny, this would never happen.
