Two simple ways to reduce or eliminate both issues: Proactively replace the IMS, run better quality (read high ZDDP and film strength) oils, change them frequently (less than 5K miles).
If you want to improve the car's odds, use a spin on filter, with a FilterMag and magnetic drain plug, run a 160F stat.
