Is there any scissoring of the fingers when he tries to make a fist? Do the fingers try to cross over One another? If not, I'd try to treat that non-surgically. Will take 6 weeks for that to heal, so check x-Rays every 1-2 weeks during that time. Keep hand splinted and immobilized during that duration. The fracture will heal, and it won't look perfect on X-Rays, but it's not likey to affect the function of the hand much. However, rotational deformity is an absolute indication for surgical intervention.

The alternative is to percutaneously pin the broken metacarpal. That's a surgery. Then you'd be assured the bones won't move before they heal. Will still take 6 weeks to heal, and still must be immobilized during that time, even with surgery.
