I had the same thing happen 30 years ago, and the first electrician wanted like $2000, my wife called the trusted electrican from the school district she worked for, he pulled the breakers and wire brushed the aluminum buss bars and charged us $200.
Shop around, if 1/2 the house has electricity and the other 1/2 doesn't, its a dirty buss bar.
Interesting, I'm going through the same thing with a bad breaker, that is obsolete today.
