CA. cars can be really bad or pretty good depending on how much time they spend near the coast. There is a large body of salt water, an ocean, right next to California, a fact that seems to be lost on a lot of people who use CA. as a reason a car is rust free. So yes if this is a CA. car it could have easily spent more time in SD than Holtville or coast cites than East of I-5 cities.
And chrome gets pitted and aluminum gets that white deposits of corrosion and rust forms in the bodies from the out side in not necessarily from the wheel wells up like salt road cars. So when some one says a car is from Cal I take that with a grain of salt,

Very true in the SouthEast as well.
Lots of cars on the coast...high humidity and salt air do not do them any favors. I remember a guy on Fripp island back in the early 1980's that had a mid-70's Datsun pickup truck. The bottom 12" of sheet metal of that truck was gone!
