tobra the thicker the steel the easier the welding. stick welding with plate is cake if you only need something meeting approximate dimensions and not precision fit.
question in my mind though is what about making it food safe. seems that might require certain steels, etc and there is where i'll bet it gets expensive (particularly shipping if steel not avail nearby).

Well i had #6 adjusted perfectly but then just before i tightened it a butterfly in Zimbabwe farted and now i have to start all over again!
