My great aunt and uncle traveled North America from the Panama Canal to Barrow Alaska and even further north in Canada. This was back when Mexico was a lot safer. They hired a local "protector" to get them through the different countries all the way down to Panama.
He was a retired crane operator from Boeing. They had a piece of property in Washington state that they stayed at just long enough to be considered residents. They were on the road the rest of the time. They visited virtually every city and every state many times. They ran into friends at every campground.
They went through motor homes, travel trailers and different configurations. In the end, his favorite was a motor-home pulling a car. That way they did not have to drive the house to the grocery store.
