i think short moves are worse than long moves.

short moves people don't pack things up because its "just down the road"
the key to making a move easy is put EVERYTHING in a box that will fit.
when pro movers moved us they would just grab something, wrap it in paper and then into a box.
then its just a matter of moving the boxes, which pack much better in a truck that individual items.

we did a 15 miles move about 10yrs ago,.
your right, you never realize how much junk you have until you move.
the garage was the worse. very large tool boxes and not on wheels.
I have 2 of the tall vidmar boxes, one half as high and then another small one,.

I helped a friend do short move one time. drove me NUTS. NOTHING was packed. anything they packed they packed it the day of the move. other than that it was never ending trips out to the truck with one or 2 items at a time.
