The FIA rushed to the Halo because politically they had to do "something" or fear getting exposed to lawsuits (The bianchi family comes to mind)... So they picked "something". Problem is it kills the research on the more elegant options...

The F16 type canopy wasn't strong enough, the FIA fired a wheel/tyre at a canopy with an air canon and it just folded back and would have caused the driver harm.

A big problem with a full canopy is getting the driver out of an up turned car which I think is the main reason for going with the halo
