Which car would you sell? And for how much?
I have a decision on my horizon and figured why not bat it around here and see what other people think. I've got 2 impact bumper cars and I have decided one of them must go. What prompted this decision is my dad. My dad has been enjoying long term loan of my 86 Carrera for the last 5 years. He has decided that he's too old to be using a vintage 911, or any sportscar for that matter, as his driver. It's currently the only car he and my stepmother have at their winter home in St George and it has stranded them twice in the last year. Come Thanksgiving he's going to drive it over Vail Pass one last time and return it to me.
I'm in the beginning stages of building a car barn, but it's really only going to be big enough for how many cars I currently have. I just don't have space for them all and building a bigger barn isn't an option since I am building on an existing slab and not pouring any new concrete. Barn will be done before winter and I'm not willing to park anything outside anymore. So something has got to go.
1986 Carrera. 125ish K mi. I think it was 105k when he took it. He has replaced the alternator, and battery during his ownership. Otherwise just one oil change. Car is light yellow sunroof coupe. Well optioned, including tail, rear wiper, headlight squirters and few things I am sure I'm forgetting. Car was in an accident shortly before I bought it. Left rear fender was replaced with a factory replacement panel all the way to the sills. You wouldn't know it unless you look closely and see that the welds are better than on the right side. It is very well blended. Also has had the front fenders massaged because dad hit a few parking lot curbs too fast and compressed the tires into the lip. I haven't seen what kind of paint damage it has. Basically it is a very nice driver Carrera but not without flaws.
1974 911 Couple. Miles? Who the F knows? This is the bastard I bought looking like a black 935 and had color changed back to original Gulf Blue with body backdate to stockish. It's got Carrera rear flares on it. Like the above repair, they were done to the sills. It's a driver quality paint job and has never been fully detailed since done. Has an S title from theft early in life. 3.2 engine on CIS and an SC 915 gearbox. 7&8x 16 Fuchs, 1974 factory sport seats, and nothing else of consequence to make it interesting. Car needs fuel lines and a full interior refresh. If I kept it long term I would do all the way through the brakes and suspension. Also needs substantial rewiring to remove an old alarm system and not 1 but 2 CD players and amps, etc. I have a set of Webers to put on it at some point. I figure $10-15k to finish it with me doing most of the labor at this point. I bought it when I had middie fever and should have held out and got a targa. Car was a mistake in the big picture, but now I've got it, and it's more pleasant to drive than the 86 ever was because I don't hit my head and it's so much lighter. Did I mention no smog?
My gutt says sell the Carrera, even with the market flattening. I've owned the car for 7? years. I haven't driven it in 5. I am no longer attached to it and I don't properly fit in a sunroof coupe anyway. I stopped doing projects for a few years and am feeling the urge to get back at it. I have plenty of projects and could work on a 914 with pretty much no out of pocket. Having a couple tens of thousands of dollars to work with could actually finish the 74 and restore the Bumble Bee. I think in Light Yellow the 86 is a good candidate for sending to BaT over Christmas holiday. Get me some holiday cheer bidders who can't wait for the snow to melt. haha.
Crap...baby woke up. I don't have a ton of pictures of each car, but will find some and get them uploaded later. In the meantime open to your thoughts. Please be sure to let me know what you think the ballpark on each car is.
