All things being equal, with the current state of the cars it seems like the '86 would be worth slightly more and the '74 is slightly more desirable to you personally. Sounds like an easy decision.
As suggested above the timing sucks. I don't follow BaT, but was of the assumption that cars with "stories" didn't fair to well there(?)
If it were me Id have your dad load it in a trailer instead of driving back over to you. Given the winter timing, you'd prob be better off selling the car in CA; I'm sure there's dozens of shops here that would be willing to house and show the car as a favor to you.
Value? $26k.
