In a completely different direction, my 11 year old (and his 13 year old sister) really enjoy Car Mechanic Simulator on STEAM. It's a PC game on top of the STEAM platform which is targeted towards technology education stuff. My kids have been playing the previous version, but 2018 just came out last week. They haven't had a chance to try it yet as we were racing last weekend.
The basic idea is that cars come into a shop and need repairs done. You click on the individual component to replace it. It sounds like 2018 has added performance upgrades and even motor swaps into the equation.
