However, the NEW shoes are about half the thickness of the original 74k miles shoes!

I ran into the same thing when I bought new shoes from Stoddard for my 356; the new shoes are maybe 60% of the thickness of the old ones. They work, and realistically I will probably never have to replace them in my lifetime, but it's still evidence of a corner being cut.

The best brake shoes I've ever had were a set that I had relined by a company in West Sacramento that does truck brakes. They were absolutely beautiful and properly chamfered as well.
