Cool dog!
You are right about the durable capabilities the LC has. Tough to deny it. For years I admired them from a distance...they were out of my price range. Many later I started my shopping with the J80 series LC. For me, the interior was a major disappointment, as I felt like I was in a run of the mill Taco truck. Now I do like a utilitarian feel, I currently drive a '04 Wrangler, but the LC just felt cheap and uninspired. Contrast that to the Discovery, of which we have owned 3 ('97 SI, '99 and '03 S2), which set the bar for a comfortable and competent cabin. Huge glass windows provide the best outside visibility driving experiences we ever had. As already said, the Discovery excels on all road surfaces.
I still think they offer huge bang for the buck if you find a good one. Most were mall crawlers for soccer Mom's which can be argued was not good for reliability. It seems the harder you drive them the better they go - at least that's the story in the LR community. For the series II Discovery line-up the big issue was the 3-Amigos which stemmed from a crummy ABS module. LR just replaced them willy nilly for $3K a pop. Someone familiar with the unit found out that a simple wire bypass to the faulty internal link fixed the issue. We're talking a $3.00 trailer wire set and 1 hr of your time. If you go with the Discovery plan on holding onto it. They are tough to sell and don't command meaningful $$ to buy. They will bleed you dry in gas, ours got 9 mpg average drinking 91 octane. Our kids are out of the house, and my wife now drives a Infinity G37 sedan, she still misses her Disco. Hot tip...stock up on $1 moving boxes from Home Depot, oil drips are normal for these things. I think it was by design, no drips means you're out of oil.
