Lots of guys referring to the "soul" of the Land Rover, which I can definitely see. Funny, though, us fans of the "real" Land Cruisers (live front axle, straight six power) talk about their "soul" as well. They are truly a no-compromise, no-B.S. off-road rig, with the last version of them (the 80 series) having fairly good around town manners as well. They are every bit as capable (properly optioned ones far more capable) than the Land Rover off-road, without the niggling little B.S. problems.

Of course, I'm biased. Here is my first Land Cruiser, the one that set the hook. A '71 FJ 40 that I sold to a buddy with over 500,000 miles on the clock. I hammered this thing off-road for 25 years and couldn't break it. Then the rust got out of hand (thank God the newer ones don't do this):
