Porsche used a soft touch plastic finish on some interior panels that tended to get soft with age, it's why the 9X6 center consoles tend to get easily beat up. Supposedly some cleaning products also softened the finish. The best fix is to have it stripped and painted, I had my 986 center console repainted in Guards Red to match the exterior for this reason.
This was in vogue with a lot of companies in the early 2000s. So much so that there's a company (Stickynomore) that specializes in refinishing these parts.
