On the model year 1986 the panel (944 503 033 02) was changed on the 944 and 924S so that panel could be unscrewed. This was done to rationalise the front end for the new Turbo (where the intercooler is under the front panel, although the Turbo/S2 use a different part number)
When you buy a new panel it is designed to be bolted in, it includes the side plate.
