M.D., thinks it's his job...all the more reason to train him to bark at stuff on command. Get him to where he barks at the stuff when you tell him, and stops when you tell him. He will learn to only bark at stuff when he is told. That has been my experience. It does take some training effort though.

My golden sometimes wakes me in the middle of the night. When I say what do you want, she very plainly and clearly says. "I want out." Other times when she wakes me up, I have fallen asleep on the couch and she doesn't say "I want out". She just barks to wake me up and wants me to move my feet so she can get on the couch as well.

You can do it. You can train that dog when and when not to bark!
