They must have done a better cleaner installation than anything else flying because I'm just not seeing it on that water-cooled B-17 prototype.

Could it be supercharged not turbocharged? Wasn't the P-38 both?

Those old turbos must have run real hot, all exposed to be cooled by passing air, not buried in sheet work.
