Hmm, that's weird. Perhaps its an issue with the case parting surfaces. But yeah, it's not elegant and it wouldn't be my first choice but I would put the stock gasket on and use Permatex ultra Black.
Tighten the 3 nuts in stages, going from one nut to another, and don't put hardly any torque on them. Hand tight is good enough. The more you torque it the more it will leak.
