You are absolutely correct about the proper repair but not going to happen on this car @ this time. Probably bondo and rattle can it.

As above, this is the correct answer for a proper repair but not spending $$ on it. I have a friend in the neighborhood who is an amazing welder, (not a car guy but an artist), had thought about having him weld some metal in it but leaning towards bondo now. Believe me, if it was a keeper that was worth anything, I'd be doing it right.
