Sure recommend doing it wrong...thats good advice..
Surface prep is key for the success of any coating system... cleaning and degreasing are first.. often followed by chloride remediation (if on steel surfaces) then surface prep by creating a profile..
Those pesky organizations that set standard for paints and coatings are where the procedures come from.... NACE... SSPC... ASTM...
Oh and wow... here is a guide from the manufacturer of one of the epoxy floor coatings...

Step 2: Degrease...
Or you could just smear that grease and oil around and have the coating come up...
