It is an open source media client.
It's functionality can be extended by a plug ins.
I have a CETON card in a PC with a cable card.
Adding NextPVR to it allows me to stream content from multiple sources to pretty much any device in the home including live TV.
Means I don't need to rent set tops from my provider.
Some people make plug ins for it that allow access to content you would, and should, normally pay for.
