No, not just you.
Like you suspect it's a combination of your aging eyes, imperfect technology, non-standardized lighting, and height of SUV's/Trucks.
Every headlight system is different and unique these days, and there are slew of lawsuits ranging from too dim to too bright as a result. I suspect many engineering staffs would rather overcompensate than come up short, it's what engineers naturally do without any encouragement.
