I once dropped the engine leaving the transmission in the car and just could not align it back. I had to drop the tranny separately, mate them together and then reinstall the package.
At this point, who knows? Maybe you get lucky but if it doesn't go back, you will have to drop the tranny.
BTW. Your engine looks pretty clean!
