Most definitely a thing here in Japan. It’s a wonderful dish. Usually served with ketchup on top. My favorite is curry omuraisu. Japanese families eat curry rice so often that when they get tired of it they can reform it into an omelette. This is typically served for lunch though.
Japanese also love having pancakes as a afternoon sweet. Usually not at breakfast.
If you want a confusing meal in the morning, try a traditional Japanese breakfast: grilled fish, rice, miso soup...It’s tasty but doesn’t go with coffee.
