We lost a dog two Halloweens ago. I had both openings to the front entryway blocked with gates so the dogs could see the kids at the open front door but not get to the front door so it would be fun for all, so I thought.
Toward the end of the evening a small cowboy was being particularly cute after I put candy in his pumpkin. He pointed into his plastic pumpkin and proclaimed, "there needs to be more chocolate in here!"
As soon as he said that he saw something even more interesting... the two dogs behind me. He bum rushed me toward the dogs and started petting them over the gate. The chocolate lab who was already exited about the whole situation pushed through the gate, out the front door, past the kid's parents (who made no effort to grab her) and was never seen again. It wasn't uncommon for her to go outside the fenced yard so I didn't worry too much about it, I just left the back gate open so she could come back. She never did.
Before I get a bunch of sad replies, I must admit that Lola had gotten to be too much for me after the wife left and I was just about to hand her off to a new family the next weekend so I wasn't too heart broken. The family that never got to know her probably were. And to the family who found her in the street and picked her up, I hope she drove them crazy!
