I do understand the desire to make the death of a loved one sound less harsh. They did not pass away or pass GO or pass a football, their life functions ceased. That is the definition or death. Maybe I am just to analytical.

You could say someone's "taking a dirt nap" or "turning into worm food." It probably won't endear you to any family or friends of the deceased.
