I hate the springing forward part.
DLST starts too early and goes on far too long for the people in more northern locations....

Really? Weird, when I lived up north on the shortest day of the year, the sun came up at about 7 and went down at 4, and in the summer, the sun came up at 4 am and went down at 7pm. I always thought that it would be more useful to have the sun in the winter come up at 8 and go down at 5.
Don't bother worrying about the whole world. In China, they cover enough space for there to be five time zones, but they only have a single time zone so the folks on the far east side of the country have "normal" daylight hours, but the folks on the west side are screwed with wonky daytime (they just follow sunrise and sunset instead of worrying about what the clock says). Then there's India who's 30 mins different from most of the rest of the world, and then, Nepal, wanting to one-up India, has their time zone set 15 mins earlier than India. There are a handful of other countries and locations that have 30 or 45 min offsets from the rest of the world. Russia seems to make adjustments to their timezones and whether they follow DST every few years.
