Most of our staff doesn't know what OWA is either, even though we show them all the time and push the icon to their desktop. We don't use it much, but there are some instances when the staff is using a "workstation" and have to check their personal work email.
You have to be salaried to be able to get email on your phone and most of the director or above level use their phones so they never bother with OWA.
Our Exchange is still local. For now and based on your experience, maybe forever.
I do like the idea of someone else being responsible for DR and outages though.
