Mel Tillis story.....................
I took the rim route along Lake Okeechobee on my sailboat back in the early 80's and stopped in the City of Pahokee, Florida. I barely was able to tie up my 35 footer on the city dock, which was meant more for speed and fishing boats, but managed. The town had a Burger King, one traffic light and a small city hall. I stopped into City Hall just to get some local information and inside emblazed on a wood door was a sign.....MEL TILLIS MUSEUM!!!!!! What?
They charged one-dollar to enter and this small 5' by 7" room had a few display cases that featured his first country western outfit he wore as a kit, school report cards, sheet music, etc, etc. This was afterall his MUSEUM!!!! Cannot say that you should drive way the hell out of your way in the middle of south central Florida, but if you love Mel, it might be worth the trip. Of course that was over 30 years ago, so no telling what's at that location these days.
