Rutager,
I have no idea how old you are, but what I have seen from some of the older guys I used to race with (they have 10 years on me), they are all in pretty darn good shape and are still very fast. I think if you keep riding you shouldn't have to give up too much speed as you age (unless if you are sprinting). I know guys that are in their late 50, to early 60s that are hauling ass with the young guys (I ride their training rides every Saturdays). I started riding seriously since 16 and raced for many years after that. Hung up my bike for 10+ years and started up again about 10 years ago. It took me some time to get back into the thick of things, but I am keeping up (sucking wheel is more like it) with some of the big dogs. I am 51 now, lots of the fast twitch speed has been lost, so I have to really work at it. Now, I like the long slight up hills that go on for a 4-5 miles. That's where legs are broken.
