Yeah, thats what they did with my Mom and her knees. Said with her dementia if they put her under (even with local) to replace them she basically wouldn't wake up. So had to manage it with pain meds, physical therapy, and Chiropractors. Did that her last 10 years. She was 84 when the dementia got noticeable.

The lady that lives in the house behind mine was a company stock holder. She has a couple of helpers to have someone there 24 hours a day. She had her 100th birthday last month. Still sharp as a tack and only has the helpers so she doesn't have to cook or clean or manage her meds. Oh yeah, or to chauffeur her around. She has a LOT of money. Outlived 3 husbands that were very well to do and got all their stuff. Brother said the round the clock help was costing her $7K/month! Costed me $1600 to have a lady move in and stay with Mom for a week when I went to a 928 GTG. Hind sight, wouldn't have done it.
