I've read all 21 of the James Lee Burke/Dave Robicheaux series. I started in a random order with a 50/50 mix of Kindle and library. No really big downside to not reading in order as the author will fill you in on any pertinent info as it occurs.
FWIW, I've started to re-read in order, because I like the narrative so much. Amazing as to how new they still seem on the second read.
