Thanks for the tips. I try to be as diligent as I can be about websites I visit, links I click and downloads. Like a lot of people, I use my computer every day for work and it's stressful when it's health is threatened - kinda sad, but true.

I visited ossiblue's link to pcrisk.com and followed the steps there, but wasn't able to locate anything that didn't seem like it should be there...

hitmanpro appears to be Windows only.

I did clear the cache & cookies and website data from Safari yesterday. The popup was only appearing when visiting ONE specific website, so hopefully that did the trick.
