Personally, I’d lean towards a heat-cured epoxy. But then, I have it readily available. We make it at work.
As for the question of actually doing it, I would have to say that unless you are going to clean-up/polish the rest of your engine compartment, don’t bother! Nothing looks worse than a half done job! IMHO!

Folks should have guessed because all the shading/highlights were exactly the same. Had you actually painted it, one would have not seen that!
