If you do get into the third generation(NC) MX5, the Achillies heel of these cars seems to be the cooling system pressure tank. They are plastic and have been known to let go as the plastic ages. There is an aluminium after market tank available which eliminates the problem.
Strangely enough, I don't recall anyone exhibiting anti Miata behaviour in the five years I have had it.

Miata aluminum tank.
