It means it's an old engine that I would buy with the intent to rebuild.
2) That's fine to subtract. You can find a CIS depending on the month, for around $500. This has not changed since 2012. People have hoarded them, then have decided to move on. Some go for much cheaper. Depends on who wants one.
3) You are forgetting that all these parts probably are good. They are probably all rebuildable parts. Many engines on here are suspect. Who knows what's going on with them.
4) Yeah, a nice fan and housing now costs $1K. Alternators are worth next to nothing, even rebuilt. A shroud, oil cooler, etc, can be found. If you really wanted one of these, some decent people around here would give you a break for your own motor I am sure and help you out. Most mufflers on these supposed 'running' motors on here are junk.
5) I think $3K is reasonable for these parts nowadays. If he wants to get what Matt says it's worth, which he may very well be able to, he'll probably need to hold on to it for a few months. Holidays and winter mean nothing on pricing, because this is when most people build their motor for spring.
Sure you can get lucky. There are still quite of few 2.7s under tarps, in sheds, in the corners of garages - running take-outs that people replaced with 3.0s when they had the time, energy, and money. They are out there. For me I am waiting for one that doesn't cost a ton and has some documents as a spare. I like the 2.7 CIS engine. I will not put a 3.0 or something else in my '75.

I don't disagree with anything written but I will highlight the word "probably" that you used. Just like the motors without paperwork you have to assume that all has to be re-inspected, re-machined, re-placed, etc, etc. So as a core disassembled long block that's all its worth to me. Don't confuse my offer with me telling him what its worth as others have clearly done. Lastly finding all of the parts in one place has an enormous value to me. You almost have to buy another motor to make sure you get everything you need
