You are correct the actual shock absorber itself is the same between 86-89 turbo's but the top mounts aren't. And because this is being sold as a shock with spring and mount, that would make it a late offset strut (as an assembly). Some folks won't know you can use pieces of it on earlier cars but as a complete unit as being sold, it won't work on 86's.
Also, turbo struts will not fit 87-89 NA's. The bolt holes where it attaches to the spindles are spaced differently. They will not bolt up without modification (and compromising the integrity of the suspension).
