A few reasons to like a Tiptronic:

- A Tiptronic cannot "mechanically" over-rev the engine as the computer won't allow a downshift until safe revs have been reached for the gear chosen.
A missed downshift, usually 5th-2nd when 4th was desired, has caused the demise of more than a few engines in manual cars.
The Tiptronic won't assist overzealous gear rowing

- A Tiptronic cannot over-rev going up the gears as the computer won't allow that either.

It does leave a bit of the visceral nature of the car on the table but it's not a terrible trade off.
