The old GE MK IV control systems had a 4-20mA input section and the fuse was rated too high (0.5 amps). If you applied 24VDC to the circuit, the resister would blow, saving the fuse. I kept lots of the the correct resistors around. I would go to an electronics store, go to the precision bin and then use a meter to check and find the ones that were PRECISELY 250 ohms. These were 1/4 Watt resistors.
I'd assign an electrical tech and a few minutes later, everything was working.
