Subie issues

So the wife drives an older (2002) Outback. It's really been a great car with few issues. She was driving home the other night when a fire fighter driving behind her lights up his blue lights. She pulls over to let him by but he pulls in behind her. Turns out he was concerned about the trail of sparks coming out from under her car. To make a long story short the front sway bar snapped off and was dragging on the pavement.

I've never had a sway bar snap like that. Weird. Anyway I decided I didn't want to deal with it so I take to a garage up the street. Never used him before but the guy I trust is retiring so I thought I'd give him a try.

He calls me later in the day to say he accidentally locked the keys in the car and can I drop off a spare key? No problem. Here's where it gets weird. The spare key and the fob will not unlock the car. The key won't turn in any of the locks and pushing the button on the fob does nothing. The key fob worked the day before. We never use the actual key except in the ignition. Any ideas on this? I'm thinking the locks may just be frozen or corroded from not being used for so many years but that doesn't explain why the fob isn't working. He's going to call a locksmith and see if he can get in the car.
