I hear what you're saying about Porsche owners and originality but I would suggest the keen interest in modded German hotrods in Audi and BMW is also present in Porsches. Also watch any of the 2002tii or 3.0CS auctions or the like (E24 M6 or E28 M5) shows how detail oriented, and in some cases, obsessive those folks can be as well. Some of the 250 / 280SL auctions are quite detailed too.
The 3.0CS that went across BAT last week located in Montreal was something special...the detailed restoration and documentation combined with both the owner and restorer's participation drove the cost to $125K or thereabouts, and it was a 5 speed conversion car. The seller's participation is absolutely the key to BAT auctions so be prepared to make yourself available and take literally hundreds of pics with supporting documentation for your submission.
That 3.0 was very hard to pass by, I've wanted something like that forever and am not overly interested in another restoration project...I was in the game and figured $90k was the right price but when it cruised easily past $100K I walked.
