The problem is not one of stick vs MIG, but of amperage, but of power. Get a small spool of bigger wire, turn up the amperage, turn down the speed, and get the thickest, shortest extension cord that will reach. And yes, if you have a good torch handy, pre-heat the joint so the welder doesn't have to work as hard.
