Typically your have a 1 in 30,000,000 chance of winning the lottery. Mathematically that's
almost the same as not playing.
But most weeks somebody somewhere wins and we all know if you don't enter you have a 100% chance of not winning.
Another way to look at it. Do you know anybody who has won the lottery?
I know lots of people and I can't think of one person who has won anything of significance.
About 4 years ago I entered a McDonald's competition using my mobile and a code on their burger packaging.
About 5 minutes later I received a txt telling me I had won $1,000!
