I believe the cable he is talking about can "turn itself off" once full charge is detected.
For 3rd party cables I buy wire wrapped as I typically travel with them.

Anker has their powerline 2 range of lightning cables (most iPhones use lightning connectors) and the powerline 2 range has a lifetime warranty. They definitely seem better made than the OEM Apple stuff.
