I think a factor in how long they last depends on if you use the phone while plugged in or not. Some folks who told me their cables never break, rarely use the phone while plugged in.

Yeah, phone and ipad mostly either unplugged in use or plugged in sitting and charging. I may occasionally have phone ipad on desk plugged in and use it for email, chat, game, but that never involves pulling the cord tight. If I need to get it extended that far, I'll just unplug it. Fortunately, the fact that there's a battery built right into the device allows me to use it in a cordless fashion.
